How local search works and what service businesses can improve: Google Business Profile, location pages, reviews, citations and local content.
01How local results are chosen
Google describes three broad factors for local results: relevance (how well a listing matches the search), distance (how far the business is from the searcher or the searched location) and prominence (how well known the business is, including reviews and links).
You cannot change distance, so the work focuses on relevance and prominence.
02Google Business Profile
The profile is the foundation of map visibility. Make sure it is complete and accurate:
- The primary category that best describes the business
- Accurate address or service area, hours and phone number
- A clear description of services
- Real photos of the premises, team and work
- Regular updates when hours or services change
03Location and service pages
Each core service deserves its own page on your website. If you serve several cities, create location pages only where you can say something genuinely specific about that area, such as the services offered there and how to reach you. Near-identical pages with only the city name changed tend to perform poorly.
04Reviews
Ask satisfied customers for honest reviews and reply to them, including the critical ones. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ratings; it breaks platform rules and damages trust.
05Citations and consistency
Your business name, address and phone number should match across your website, Google Business Profile and major directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines to trust the information.
06A simple local SEO checklist
- Complete and verify the Google Business Profile
- Build a strong page for each core service
- Add location pages only where they are genuinely useful
- Keep name, address and phone consistent everywhere
- Ask for reviews and respond to them
- Link location and service pages together internally
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a physical office to rank locally?
Service-area businesses can rank without a public address by setting a service area on their profile, but the business must genuinely serve those areas.
How long does local SEO take?
It depends on competition and the current state of the profile and website. Some fixes, such as correcting categories, can show effect quickly; building prominence takes longer.
