How to Do a Complete SEO Audit for Your Website

An SEO audit should end with a short list of actions in priority order, not a long export of warnings. This guide walks through the checks that matter and how to turn findings into a plan.

In short

A step-by-step SEO audit process: crawl and indexing checks, on-page review, content gaps, internal links, authority and a prioritised action list.

01Before you start

Collect access and context first:

  • Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 access
  • A full crawl of the site with an SEO crawler
  • The business goals: which services, products or locations matter most
  • Any recent changes such as a redesign, migration or CMS switch

02Step 1: Crawl and indexing

Compare three lists: the URLs your crawler finds, the URLs in your XML sitemap, and the URLs Search Console reports as indexed. Gaps between them point to problems.

Look for:

  • Important pages excluded from the index, and the reason given
  • Pages blocked by robots.txt or tagged noindex by mistake
  • Broken internal links and 4xx or 5xx responses
  • Redirect chains and loops

03Step 2: Technical health

Review canonical tags, duplicate URLs, mobile usability, HTTPS, structured data validity and Core Web Vitals for your main page templates.

04Step 3: On-page review

For each priority page, check that the title, H1 and opening copy clearly match one search intent. Watch for two pages competing for the same query (keyword cannibalization) and for pages with no clear purpose.

05Step 4: Content gaps

List the questions and services your customers search for, then check whether a strong page exists for each. Missing pages, thin pages and outdated pages all belong in the plan.

06Step 5: Internal linking

Priority pages should receive descriptive links from related pages. Orphan pages, which have no internal links pointing to them, are easy wins.

07Step 6: Authority and local signals

Review the backlink profile for relevance and quality rather than raw counts. For local businesses, check the Google Business Profile, reviews and consistency of name, address and phone number across listings.

08Step 7: Prioritise

Score each finding by impact and effort, then group the work:

  1. Blocking issues: anything stopping key pages from being crawled or indexed
  2. High-impact fixes on priority pages
  3. Content and internal linking improvements
  4. Longer-term authority work

Frequently asked questions

How long does an SEO audit take?

A small business site can be reviewed in a few days. Large ecommerce or multi-language sites take longer because there are more templates and URL patterns to check.

What is the difference between a free audit and a full audit?

A free review highlights visible high-level issues. A full audit covers technical, content, architecture and search-performance analysis in depth, with prioritised recommendations.
